LOCATION
NICHE Health Project (Cork) CLG premises: HSE Building, Harbour View
Road, Knocknaheeny, the Knocknaheeny/Hollyhill Community Garden,
Hollyville Estate, Hollyhill, Cork or nominated locations. The
Community Health Worker (CHW) will be assigned a base location but
will be expected to work across all Niche sites or designated sites
for community or interagency events.
CONTRACT
An initial 1 year fixed-term contract will be offered to the
successful candidate. This may be extended based on operational
requirements, subject to continued funding. A probationary period of 6
months will apply.
HOURS OF WORK
The contracted number of hours of employment is **Apply on the
website** hours. Occasional out of hours working may be required for
which a time off in lieu system is in operation.
SALARY
Point 1 of the CHW salary scale for this post. It is company policy
that new employees are appointed at Point 1 of their respective
scales. Increasing yearly after that.
RECRUITMENT

REPORTING STRUCTURE
The CHW will report to the Niche Project Manager.
NICHE HEALTH PROJECT CORK
Niche Health Project is located in the centre of Knocknaheeny and is
for the people of Knocknaheeny, Hollyhill and surrounding areas. Niche
aims to address health inequality using a social model of health
locally to improve the quality of life for people living in the
project’s catchment area.
With the Community Health Worker model at the heart of the
organisation, Niche places itself within the community as a mechanism
to support people with their immediate needs as well as working with
others toward a long term vision for the area.
The catchment area in which Niche works has many strengths and
supports and it is through a shared and collaborative approach that
the work of Niche is able to take place.
JOB PURPOSE
Operating within the social model of health, the CHW’s role will be
to engage with members of the community living within the geographical
catchment area and develop appropriate programmes according to their
need in both the project’s sites.
JOB DESCRIPTION
THE RESPONSIBILITIES FOR THE POST ARE:
* Develop and assist in the development of evidence based informed
programmes that targets health needs in the area.
* Support community participants at point of contact and within
facilitated groups.
* Work collaboratively with other agencies in both the geographical
catchment area and beyond.
* Sign post and refer community participants to appropriate services
that Niche are unable to provide.
* Work with management and the team to develop and deliver key
project objectives.
* Research and evaluate key trends impacting on the health and the
outcomes of community participants.
* Evaluate and reflect on own work and share learning with team and
key stakeholders.
* Act as an advocate for community participants.
* Outreach to new participants who may not have come into contact
with the Niche project.
PERSON SPECIFICATION
ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE
Each candidate must, at the latest date for receipt of completed
application form for the post, have:
* A relevant qualification in Community Work / Community Development
/ Community Education/Health Promotion/The Humanities or related area
of study e.g. a certificate, diploma or degree in Youth and Community
Work / Community Education.
Or
* At least two years’ experience relevant to the post.
* Have well developed IT skills.
* Have the capacity to undertake group work and facilitate
workshops.
* Have experience of undertaking reviews and evaluations of work
undertaken.
* Have the capacity to research and identify key trends impacting on
health in Ireland.
* Be flexible and adaptable in their approach to work and people.
DESIRABLE EXPERIENCE
* Knowledge of sustainable communities in a community development
context.
* Knowledge of national policy and the impact on community health.
* Experience of working at an interagency level across Cork City and
beyond.

The post holder must be able to demonstrate the following personal
qualities:
* Have a professional and caring strengths based approach to the
project’s participants.
* Have excellent interpersonal and communication skills and an
ability to switch when working with different stakeholders.
* Have the ability to organise and prioritise own workload.
* Have a high level of initiative and motivation and the capacity to
work independently.
* Have the capacity to incorporate reflective practice and programme
evaluations into their work.
* Have a strong understanding of social justice and social
inequality.
* Have a positive and energetic outlook to their work and the
impacts it has on the people that it comes into contact with.
* Have empathy, cultural sensitivity, conflict resolution skills,
and the ability to work with diverse communities.
